Vigorous Pranayama exercises are not advisable. Vigorous Bastrika Pranayama can lead to Inguinal Hernia. Extended Kumbhaka (Retention) Pranayama can lead to premature, accidental, and force awakening, activation, and ascension of sleeping Kundalini. As a result, the person could suffer from psychosomatic disorders called Kundalini syndrome. It can lead to premature death also. Vigorous Kapalabhati (Head Clenzing) Pranayama with open eyes can damage the eyes leading to migraines and glaucoma. Vigorous Ujjayi Pranayama can damage the larynx and vocal cords.

According to Akhanda Yoga, Pranayama exercises should be gradual and in tune with the natural design of the respiratory system.

1. Start with breath-balancing Pranayama of Anulom-Vilom.

2. Once, the breath starts flowing equally through both the nostrils (Sushumna-Nadi), breathe in and chant “A” while exhalation process. The concentration should on the pelvic area.

3. After five rounds of “A” chanting, shift focus on the chest and chant “U” while exhaling.

4. After rounds of “U” chanting, shift focus to head and chant “M” while exhaling.

5. After five rounds of “M” chanting, shift focus to one foot over the head and breathe out slowly without any chanting. This process is called Turiya breathing.

6. After that we can inhale slowly and deeply and exhale while chanting AUM* in ascending order.

7. This is the safest and most effective breathing exercise for spiritual integration.
