The Role of a Meditation Teacher

Here are some things you need to keep in mind if you would like to become a meditation teacher:

  1. Bring an open mind
  2. Be flexible in your approach
  3. Be Genuine, your real self is the most important thing you bring to the table.
  4. Be Confident

To begin with, don’t ever expect to be one single thing as a meditation teacher. Once you get your meditation certification, consider that a license to drive. You’ll just be beginning! Your students will be coming to you from many different places in life, and they will each have their own needs and experience in the world.

As their teacher it will be your job to meet them where they are and to help them find the meditative practice they need, not just the one you teach.

Some days you may feel like a cheerleader, guiding groups of people through shared meditation and celebrating their collective success.

Another day you might be more like a therapist, helping your client or student use meditation to overcome the negative emotions that hold them back.

You also need to be real. This isn’t something you should do just for the money, you will know it, your students will know it, and so will your colleagues.

You can’t ask your students to do the hard work of developing a meaningful life-changing practice if you haven’t done the work yourself.

You will walk with people through their journeys, and you need to bring your experience with you. Sometimes you will share the joys of life, there as your clients get married or become parents, or meet meditative goals.

Sometimes you will share the tragedies of life with your students, especially your long-term students. You will walk with them as they process and recover from the deaths of loved ones, from job loss, from bad breakups.

Some days it will be your job to tell them they can meditate, they can get through this, that they are strong enough.

Most of all, you need to know that you are ready. You can do this, and you are enough for your students.
